In the 19th century, as dinosaur skeletons were being unearthed, artists were taking note. This is "Life in the Jurassic Sea" by Robert Farren, 1850
A great example is Maria Sibylla Merian, the 17th c German illustrator, who was a pioneer in scientific accuracy, showing many stages of life of various species in her work.
Next stop, Paris. It turns out that French drosophila are just like American ones, but with more panache.
@redpenblackpen So anyway - after I had the big layout I started to add the features. Most of these I did on separate sheets of paper. Because of the line-art style of my drawing compositing the final map in Photoshop works really well 6/n
@redpenblackpen BTW the map was inspired- at least in feeling and perspective- by this iconic one from J.R.R. Tolkien at the start of LOTR but also has elements drawn from old map art (the statistician and compass, e.g.) 5/n

This recent one explains why pine trees (not pineapples) have that amazing smell! https://t.co/BH5kZUoOzm or this one about invasive species https://t.co/boPrDHybST 23/n

The humor in these comics (and her others) is clearly linked to the underlying scientific principles - which is a true accomplishment 20/n
@redpenblackpen @xkcdComic @theawkwardyeti @PHDcomics @ErrantScience @MCeeP @BioDataGanache @eliza_coli @pedromics @RosemaryMosco @VirologyComics @AAASmeetings The other organizer of our upcoming @AAASmeetings workshop is the fabulous @matteofarinella - who has produced the gorgeous (AND EDUCATIONAL! sensing a theme here?) Neurocomic book (@neurocomic) about the brain- which I feel is a classic in the making 19/n
