Red (along with other warm colours) symbolises the Middle World, fire, blood, strength and male sexual energy. The earth goddess Kaltaš wears a red robe to symbolise the connection to the Middle World - the earth.

It's thought that the waterfowl variant is older with the horse one developing later. Both animals in Finno-Ugric cultures symbolise mediation between the There Worlds and are associated with the mediator-god archetype, who occupies a vital part in many Finno-Ugric religions.
