Retrogaming of the 8 and 16 bit variety. That's my jam. 😎

There's only one old-Amiga shooter as addictive .. and that's Battle Squadron. (by the same guys.) :p

Oh the arcade days were brilliant. The corner chippie 🍟 had around eight decent machines, and in the city there was one good arcade, and an okay one on the same block. I remember one of them had Turbo. That game sounded so good. 😁 The other had sit-down Star Wars + Sinistar. 👍

Hmmm. 🤔
Oh, I think the problem was me! 😁
I'm old, with slow-reactions these days (and am too lazy to break out the old C64/Amiga joysticks sometimes).. So the C64 and Amstrad ones I eventually cheated on for an easy play-through. I couldn't find a good cheat Speccy version. 😋

The Speccy gameplay was ok. But it didn't manage to wow me somehow. The controls were fine. But maybe I was a little underwhelmed with the sprites. They seemed a little tall and boxed. Like I could see the rectangle they were supposed to fit. I was hoping for a little more flair.

To my surprise, it was the Amstrad one that impressed me. There was just something a little better with the responsiveness of the controls, and how I could fluidly get in attack moves a bit better than one the C64 version. (Also, it didn't seem to want me dead in 30 seconds.) 😋

Late last year I did try out all three, as I'd only ever played the absurdly cruel (but undeniably pretty) C64 version up until that point. 😁 I'd heard the Amstrad version was pretty good, so I thought "what the heck" and tried out all three. Verdict: C64, still pretty/cruel. 😋

But I love all the cinema billboard stuff at the beginning, where you get to choose your creature and the goal. It's typical Epyx fare: all gorgeously presented. Same goes for the monster sprites in the game: they move slow, but they look cool while they're doing it. 😁

Karate Champ is a close second though.. 😉

The programmers were already so technically competent with the C64 ..and the Amiga was new, and they were still finding their way. (and making good dev-tools) 😁 Also, yeah, I really have a soft-spot for the sound of the 6581 SID. Still love to hear it's very particular sound. 🎵

Yeah. It's just so beautifully done.
Nothing technically flash going on, just really good pixel-art. 👍
