Shrine with the household gods (lares) pouring libations and making offerings in the House of the Vettii, #Pompeii.

This room has just opened to the public #FrescoFriday
Border control.
Sometimes all the action is happening in the border framing the main fresco panels. Where else would you find cupids racing chariots pulled by goats?

The House of the Vettii, #Pompeii reopened to the public this week so to celebrate #FrescoFriday, one of its most renowned paintings: the punishment of Ixion who is attached to a wheel by Mercury.
A watercolour by Luigi Bazzani captures the room during its excavation in 1895.
Tipping with rain here and just being reminded how vibrant the opus sectile paving of the House of the Faun in #Pompeii looked recently when rained on. You can just make out the reflection of the bronze copy of the Faun statue in the first photograph.
Food for thought.
Some frescoes from the House of the Stags #Herculaneum are in situ, and many are on display in @MANNapoli - note the coins wedged in the dates.I like the idea that they could represent perpetual offerings to the gods. #FrescoFriday
The sanctuary of a garden fresco from #Pompeii.
One of the earliest houses to be excavated, this fresco was found on 30th June 1764 in the House of Diana in the Insula Occidentalis.
@chapps @JohnJJohnston @PlanetPompeii Oh I very much like that notion too! They certainly appear with alarming regularity in the fresco found in the Temple of Isis showing a ritual in honour of Osiris.
@holland_tom @gordoncorera @TheRestHistory Am listening to it in Pompeii surrounded by pigeons.
