Astonishing detail revealed in these close-up photos of two of the objects that were found amongst the collection of talismans discovered in #Pompeii.
I love the vine leaf crown (of Bacchus?) and is that a satyrs tail I can see?

Am in total love with this swooping black-headed dove in the dining room fresco from the House of the Golden Bracelet, #Pompeii. The bronze statue—a truly elaborate lamp stand—is from the House of Ephebus, #Pompeii #LastSupperinPompeii
Rather pleasing to read that Ingres was so influenced by the fresco of Odysseus & Penelope found in the Macellum in #Pompeii, that he made use of her pose in his represention of Stratonice in the painting ‘The Sickness of Antiochus’.

For those interested the last image is a detail from one of two stunning frescoes from #Herculaneum showing stages of a religious ritual dedicated to Isis. The god is symbolised by water in a golden vase. from The other fresco also has some lovely ibises lurking around the altar.
The bull’s side-eye is magnificent.
Europa and the Bull fresco from the House of Jason #Pompeii #NaplesMuseum
Stumbled across this, presumably rare, photograph of the painter Lawrence Alma-Tadema on site in #Pompeii sketching in the House of Sallust.
His most famous painting of Pompeii is ‘An Exedra’ (1869) set at the schola (bench) tomb of the priestess Mammia near the Herculaneum Gate.
Plenty of superb owls in #Pompeii but perhaps my favourite is the graffito in the House of the Cyptoporticus that looks like an owl-headed person hunting an oversized chicken.

The garden scene from Livia’s villa at Prima Porta, just outside of Rome, is undoubtedly one of the most stunning frescoes from the Roman world. Such serenity.
