Today I'm working on my winter reviews and trying to pick my favourite 50 titles of the year. Not an easy task, it's been a stellar year for children's books. But this one - published in Jan by has stayed in my heart and mind all year. Def no 1 on the list.

When I was two my baby sister arrived and I was not well pleased! My mum read me Peter’s Chair by Ezra Jack Keats, the story of a boy who is so fed up when his parents start painting everything in the house pink that he grabs his chair (to save it) + sets up house in the yard.

Today I’d like to talk about picturebooks and the magnificent Beatrice Alemagna.
We underestimate children all the time, they love strong, bold artwork in their books - from Jon Klassen’s boxy shapes, to Yasmeen Ismail’s colour splashes, to Sydney Smith’s painterly sweeps.

New from Michael Emberley and Marie-Louise Fitzpatrick - I Can Make a Train Noise - about a girl who visits a cafe + transforms it into a train using the power of her imagination. The story is told using v few words, the clever, detailed illustrations take over the storytelling.

It’s not often that a non fiction book makes me cry but this one did - it’s so full of heart and hope and oh my, the illustrations!
The colours, the shapes, Flora’s command of each spread. Her portrayal of the strong capable women and girls. Magnificent!
