I'm currently reading Utterly Dark and the Face of the Deep by @philipreeve1 and it's outstanding. The writing is so beautiful I have to keep stopping to re-read sentences. The craft that has gone into the writing - it's outrageously good. Cover by Irish artist @paddydonnelly
As I suspected - I keep seeing books in @HalfwayUpBooks that I NEED. Like this charming, lyrical unicorn tale for age 5+ about a girl who finds a unicorn in the brambles + looks after her. Delighted to be back bookselling - but I’ll need to leave my wallet at home! 😂
I just made a short list of good books to read to a bright age 6 for someone. Sharing for you guys in case it's helpful:
Charlotte's Web - such a sweet book.
Similar in tone - Saving Winslow by Sharon Creech.
Pizazz by Sophy Henn is great fun + has terrific illustrations.
The watercolour illustrations are a joy, full of vibrant colour and small details like the strawberry pattern on the girl’s plate. It’s a quiet gem and a picturebook I come back to over and over again. Age 3+.
When you dig deeper, like the miners, guided by Sydney’s outstanding illustrations, oh boy! It’s a snap shot of a whole way of life, past, present + future. The New York Times called it ‘quietly devastating’. It’s one of my all time favourite picturebooks - remarkable! Age 6+
Take Off Your Brave: Poems Just for You by Nadim aged 4 + illustrated by Irish illustrator, Yasmeen Ismail is terrific. Poet/teacher Kate Clancy gave Nadim’s mum some ideas + off he flew! A valuable and joyful insight into the mind of a young child, with terrific artwork. Age 5+
Mr Rabbit and the Lovely Present by C Zolotow is another one I’m drawn back to time and time again. It’s a straight forward story - a rabbit helps a girl find the perfect present for her mother - but the watercolour artwork inspired by Winslow Homer is extraordinary. Age 5+
Mindi and the Goose That No One Could See by Sam McBratney and Linda Olafsdottir is a gentle, kind, sensitive story about childhood anxiety - real and imagined. The illustrations suit the text perfectly. Age 4+
Sam sadly died last year but his books live on.
I’m loving Canadian picturebooks and publishers at the moment - the books coming out of Canada are sublime.
I’d like to discover more!
Any recommendations?
I highly recommend following @Sydneydraws and Seeking out/buying I Talk Like a River by @jscottwrites and Sydney.
The Wolf’s Secret is a beautifully written modern fairy tale by Myriam Dahman + Nicolas Digard, illustrated by Julia Sarda. And what illustrations they are - lush, strong and full of telling details. Magnificent! Age 5+ but older children of 7+ will also love it. @HachetteKids
