Welcome to Winter 2018/19 - a long cold snap likely for parts of Europe. The maps give an idea of how cold/warm relative to average for the next 2 weeks, but for short-term snow details for your area, refer to your local weather experts.

The best estimate shows November 2018 was a warmer than average month over large portions of Europe, and notably so in Finland (map credit: @WorldClimateSvc).

The average of the last 12 CFSv2 weather model runs for December looks strikingly similar to the analogue below using the average of the 5 most similar previous years sea surface temps across the Atlantic & Pacific oceans.

A big low pressure anomaly will impact NW Europe this week, bringing some wet & windy weather with well above average temperatures. I'm expecting the GB wind power record to be broken on Wednesday.

After a very mild first half to November, much colder air will become established across Europe during the second part of the month.

Expected weather patterns indicate temperatures will be above or well above average across large parts of Europe next week. This means heating demands will be lower than normal across many countries. (High confidence).

Dramatic Himawari-8 satellite imagery of super Typhoon JEBI, which is expected to impact Japan early next week.

Strong signals for a high pressure anomaly to develop across northern Europe in September. This would lead to below average rainfall, notably for Scandinavia and the UK (and lots of pleasant autumn weather too!).
