THE WELL OF SHIUAN (1977)

One of the most intriguing aspects to the character Morgaine created by C.J. Cherryh is her spell-sword.

It was like winning an illustrator’s lottery to have the opportunity to contribute to such important and popular books, which were both a joy to work with and inspired some of my most popular cover paintings.

Was it the life-sized fly on the doll's empty eye socket or the demented stares on the girls' faces as they peered out of the darkness?

That unsettling unease is what good horror paintings are all about.

Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn went on to become a bestselling trilogy for @tadwilliams, but the series has had a more lasting impression critically.

George R.R. Martin credited the books as an inspiration for his series A Song of Ice and Fire (Game of Thrones).

No matter how intriguing, when a manuscript is long and complicated it's hard to choose one scene that will be faithful to the story and grab new readers.

Before starting, the smart thing to do would have been to examine the actual game to become familiar with the feel of it, but instead I jumped into exploring dramatic dragon poses and having fun with that.

The general concept for this work was spelled out to me by my art director and contact at Blizzard, Jeremy Cranford.

Another favorite book from last year was ENCHANTED featuring cover art by Donato Giancola. That piece perfectly represented the fantastic show at the Rockwell Museum.

Donato is exhibiting at the Huntsville Museum of art now. Highly recommend if you're in the area.

When TOR released The Wheel of Time ebooks, they tapped different artists for each book.

There were many gorgeous covers on those, but my favorite might be The Shadow Rising by Sam Weber. His art perfectly encapsulates Mat Cauthon for me.
