The scene captures a moment of harrowing escape through the desert. The dragons fighting in the background while an immediate threat also represent the untapped power of the prince's kingdom.
When I laid them lengthways, I was inclined to think of landscapes, so my painted strokes ended up not quite as random as originally intended.

I loved this book—the characters of the protagonists and the dragon are very engaging and held my interest right from the start.
The first 3 books (City, Time and Again, and The Trouble with Tycho) were classics reissued by ACE and among my earliest commissions back in 1976.
I made a few additions to fit the scene, including a hint of the Red King's deserted castle and a gathering of rooks and crows. I even gave Mordred a nose, but I had to keep the football-shaped head and his deliciously evil grin.
