Choosing an approach to focus on wasn’t easy because of the myriad possibilities beckoning me in Brandon’s wonderful story—but I hope I captured a glimpse of the strangeness of the place in my illustration.

It was both a dream assignment as well as a monumental challenge to attempt to visualize Shadesmar for the cover of Rhythm of War.

Cover illustration for SWORDS & ICE MAGIC by Fritz Leiber (ACE)

Rather than trying to illustrate a scene from one particular story, I decided that the best approach for the cover was to do portraits of the heroes.

The author had been writing about their adventures for almost 40 years and each book in the series was an anthology of stories that had been published in other books and magazines.

This cover was for the sixth book in a series by Fritz Leiber featuring the beloved characters Fafhrd and the Grey Mouser.

"...The most terrifying fact about the universe is not that it is hostile but that it is indifferent…but if we can come to terms with this indifference, then our existence as a species can have genuine meaning. However vast the darkness, we must supply our own light.”

But I have repeatedly gone back to that interview and been inspired by comments made by the director. Of particular relevance for this painting is the following bit:

“The very meaninglessness of life forces man to create his own meaning...

While reading the book, I thought the cover painting should suggest antique Vatican art, so I chose a color scheme that hinted of age and heavy coats of varnish gone yellow.
