I'd recommend Astalon: Tears of the Earth.
A tribute to NES games, very fun and challenging metroidvania/action search game.
Does have some glitches in it, but the devs have squashed a lot of them. 100%ed last night, super fun experience.

Shantae: Risky's Revenge is basically a compact metroidvania. It doesn't sprawl as much or require as much lengthy backtracking as bigger games in the genre. The transformations are cute and mostly used well. Presentation is nice.
