Stirling and Halifax bombers of the Pathfinder force used H2S to drop flares on a target in Hamburg. 100 Lancasters following the Pathfinders used the flares as the target for their bombsights.

On in 1943, a daring night torpedo plane attack disabled the freshly repaired USS Chicago. The parting blow of the Guadalcanal Campaign helped to mask the Japanese retreat from the "Starvation Island". The Chicago was abandoned the next day after more damage.
