It was written to give kids the tools to recognise that something was up at home and to communicate that to someone else for help. Maybe nightmares is a reasonable risk if it can help out kids with their reality. On the whole, the art's softness works well to temper the content.

I really don´t like the art direction of DKC3 in general, it, not just Kiddy Kong, all the enemy designs look worse than their DKC-DKC2 iterations, somehow having better 3D modeling tools make the characters less appealing.
