Early Dragonite:
Dragonite's Red & Green sprite is his earliest known design, pre-dating his official artwork. Dragonite's sprite shows a ridge running down his back -- but it was later revised out of his design.

Beta Dragonair:
Dragonair's Japanese name is Hakuryū, meaning "White Dragon." His name appears to be a reference to his original beta design -- back when he was white, rather than blue.

Lost Dratini:
Dratini's Red & Green sprite -- his earliest known design, pre-dating his artwork -- shows he originally had a segmented belly. His later Blue sprite used this design as well.

Beta Quagsire:
In Gold & Silver's 1997 demo, Quagsire was originally an unevolved pure Water-type. But Quagsire ended up getting revised to Water/Ground, and given Wooper as a pre-evolution.

Lost Pokemon of the Day: Turban
First revealed when Gold & Silver's 1997 demo leaked in 2018, Turban was almost promoted to becoming its own Pokemon... rather than just the monster that chews on Slowbro's tail.

Lost Pokemon of the Day: Gorochu
First revealed by Game Freak developers in a 2018 Japanese newspaper interview, Gorochu was planned for Gen 1 as Raichu's evolution, but was cut due to a lack of cartridge space.

Spectrier:
Playing Crown Tundra today, I suddenly came across a new Legendary Pokemon called Spectrier. It's basically Beta Suicune, but it's a horse. https://t.co/h5oxr0erEh
Beta Suicune:
In Gold & Silver's 1997 demo, not only did Suicune have a radically different (and very emo) design, but it was simply named Sui -- which translates into English as "Water."

Lost Pokemon of the Day: Beta Squids
First discovered when Gen 1 beta assets leaked in 2019, these two Beta Pokemon were created during Red & Green's development... but they didn't end up making Gen 1's final cut.

Lost Corn Pokemon?
Muneo Saitō, the designer who created Gen 2's Legendary Beasts, published these monster designs in 2014. Saitō said they were created for a video game, but got scrapped during development. Unfortunately, he didn't specify whether or not that game was Pokemon.
