Captain America (2018) #16
U. S. Agent catches up with Cap. Writer Ta-Nehisi Coates uses a former friend to give a different insight into Steve’s current situation. Artist Bob Quinn’s somewhat minimalist style doesn’t suit the darker story Coates is weaving as past artists. 3/5
Captain Marvel (2019) #12
Captain Marvel fights with King Thor to the death! Writer Kelly Thompson gets attention immediately and doesn’t let got till the end. New artist Lee Garbett has a nice brushed-finish style, that has a classic feel that suits this book well. 4.5/5
Star Wars (2015) #74
Nearing the final fight or flight. Writer Greg Pak jambs a multitude of amazing moments into this penultimate issue. Artist Phil Noto’s work, both rendering and color, has been consistently excellent. 4.5/5
X-Men (2019) #2
Krakoa is under attack... from another island! Writer Jonathan Hickman deploys an unusual salvo from his arsenal - humor. Penciler Leinil Francis Yu, Inker Gerry Alanguilan and Colorist Sunny Gho’s style doesn’t lend itself quite as well to this story dynamic. 4/5
Tales of Suspense #75 (1966-Mar.)
Captain America must find a highly explosive chemical in “30 Minutes to Live!” Script Stan Lee, Plot-Layouts Jack Kirby, Pencils-Inks Dick Ayers. Classic Lee-Kirby intrigue and action, that introduces Batroc and Cap’s former/future flames. 4/5
Tales of Suspense #75 (1966-Mar.)
Iron Man must stop “The Fury of the Freak!" Writer Stan Lee, Penciler Gene Colan, Inker Jack Abel. Some minor emotion is evinced by Tony from having to stop his friend without his weapons and some good Colan-Abel art, but not much else. 3/5
Immortal Hulk (2018) #26
Banner declares war on Human Society. The scene with Banner telling Cho what is wrong with what Humanity has done with the world, is the scariest thing that’s happened in this book. Talented Al Ewing, Joe Bennett, Rudy José and Paul Mounts. 5/5
Blacksad: A Silent Hell (2012)
Detective John Blacksad is hired to find a celebrated pianist in the midst of drugs, voodoo, the rollicking atmosphere of Mardi Gras. Writer Juan Diaz Canales and Artist Juanjo Guarnido’s collaborative perfection in their fourth Blacksad GN. 5/5
Excalibur (2019) #1
The Otherworld is at war and Captain Britain holds the amulet, fighting for Avalon with Rogue, Gambit, Rictor, Jubilee and Apocalypse. Writer Tini Howard’s dialogue-drenched script didn’t demystify the premise. I do love Marcus To & Erick Arciniega’s art. 3/5
@ConanComicBooks I didn’t say using Momoa as a model was a problem. I guess I’m old school and prefer it when Conan doesn’t look like an actor, but springs mostly from the artist’s imagination – Frank Frazetta, Boris Vallejo, Ken Kelly, Earl Norem to name just a few of my favorites.
