Captain Marvel: Braver and Mightier (2019)
Carol is late for a presser, saving the world (again). Writer Jody Houser does a nice job of establishing Captain Marvel’s current superhero status, touching on her past and setting up the future series. Art by Simone Buonfantino 4/5

Captain America (2018)
Cap survives captivity, while Carter finds Ross’ true killer. Writer Ta-Nehisi Coates is still exploring the fine line between right/wrong and good/evil. Artist Adam Kubert and colorist Frank Martin continue to do solid storytelling. 3/5

Port of Earth
Time is running out to uncover the truth about the alien virus. Writer Zack Kaplan is weaving a complex tapestry of plot threads that seem to be coming to a head. Artists Andrea Mutti and Jordan Boyd, as always, display excellent draftsmanship and craft. 4/5

The Unstoppable Wasp (2018)
Nadia discovers a hard truth. Writer Jeremy Whitley tackles a difficult subject with perfect wit and sensitivity. Art team Gurihiru make excellent use of closeups to bring out the true depth of emotions these characters are feeling. 5/5

Avengers (2018)
Dracula staves off his enemies even in a Russian prison. Writer Jason Aaron’s skill at circumvented reader expectation is well exemplified. Artist David Marquez and colorist Erick Arciniega’s art is, as ever, full of expressive power and energy. 4/5

Criminal
A young Ricky Lawless is dissatisfied with his new home life. Writer Ed Brubaker interestingly chooses to fill in the backstory in part three of his Cruel Summer epic. Artist Sean Phillips and colorist Jacob Phillips’ clear, concise visuals always deliver. 4/5

Berserker Unbound
A warrior returns home to tragedy and leaves his world behind. Writer Jeff Lemire uses minimalist first person narrative effectively to convey the protagonist’s mindset. Artist Mike Deodato Jr. & colorist Frank Martin’s powerful imagery speaks volumes. 4.5/5

Star Wars (2015)
A parting and a reunion. Writer Kieron Gillen mostly uses this issue between arcs to set up the next. Andrea Broccardo’s art looks a little stilted in places. 3/5

Captain America (2018)
Steve turns himself in. Writer Ta-Nehisi Coates’ new arc is a slow burn, but hints at a few ideas to keep me reading. Adam Kubert’s layouts and storytelling are solid, but his rendering is lax, leaving color artist Frank Martin to fill in some gaps. 3/5
