Mysterious islands! Lost worlds! Underground peril! Beneath the sea! Outer space! Adventure! Dinosaurs! Monsters! Aliens!

I love all the contrasting colours that depict the different settings, temperature, tone and motifs. From cool watery pastels and earthy reds (Atreides), sickly greens and blacks (Harkonnen) to opulent golds (The Emperor).

That sweet Freddie Francis cinematography.

And as always, how exciting were the film posters of yesteryear. Thrills! Danger! Supreme Excitement!

Malone also later tried to get another Giger inspired sci-fi horror film into production “Dead Star” which was basically ‘Hellraiser in Space’ which some claim later informed the film “Event Horizon.”
And another Giger inspired film “The Mirror” as featured in Cinefantastique.

The production art poster artwork that it comes with is glorious. But of course all of the extras/documentaries etc are in Japanese. I really wish someone like would do a nice polished blu ray box set release of this using Noriyoshi Ohrai’s artwork for the film.

The one Hayao Miyazaki film that I often think gets short thrift is “The Wind Rises.” Some have called it misguided but I find that its themes, character dynamics and politics complex and not open to easy answers; just like the balance of art, dreams and commerce always has been.

Our favourite was “Drunken Master” and John Woo films. Whereas I wanted to focus on humour and horror games/comics my friend Tameem later went on to develop and direct fighting video games such as “Heavenly Sword” and “Hell Blade.”

Thanks to those kung fu films and video games!

Enjoying listening to the audio commentary for Jackie Chan’s “The Young Master.” Esp’ the commentary for the 15 minute long finale fight scene. Learning that the scene was the main inspiration for the Capcom arcade game “Street Fighter” as the film was a big hit in Japan.

Favourite TV/streaming show this year:

“Midnight Mass” - Netflix.

Just like “The Green Knight” this was a show that got into my head and made me ponder its themes and messages. I wasn’t 100% sold on some moments but this self contained drama challenged my thoughts and feelings.
