Hottest year on record for Europe?
The following countries so far have confirmed 2020 as:
Hottest year on record: 🇳🇴🇸🇪🇫🇮🇪🇪🇱🇻🇨🇭🇫🇷🇳🇱🇧🇪
2nd hottest: 🇵🇱🇩🇰🇩🇪
3rd hottest: 🇬🇧
5th hottest: 🇦🇹
Map data using @CopernicusEU ERA5 reanalysis. Comparing temperature to 1981-2010 average.
NOVEMBER marks the 6th all time monthly heat record in 2020. 2020 now contains at least half the monthly heat records globally.
Arctic looks like it is on fire here. This is not surprising given the lack of sea ice. Textbook Arctic amplification.
Cold in central Asia.
Earth has a fever in more ways than one. Some places averaged + 5-7 °C warmer than normal for the ENTIRE YEAR of 2020.
An enormous area of anomalous warmth plagued Arctic Siberia effectively all year but it was not just the Arctic where we saw record shattering warmth.
THREAD
Watch the dome of extreme anomalous warmth just sit over Canada for the next few days.
Places that are usually -20 to -30 °C at this time of year will only be a few degrees below freezing.
We just witnessed the warmest winter night in Canadian history.
Parts of Nova Scotia didn't drop below 60 °F (15.5 °C) all night long. This is warmer than an average summer night!
Oh and parts of Arctic Northwest Territories will rise above freezing shortly.
h/t @extremetemps.
Speaking of Australia (again)...
-Hottest November ever.
-Hottest Spring on record and +2 °C above the 1961-1990 average.
First ever spring with an anomaly above +2 °C.

Cold in Canada,
Cool La Niña in the pacific,
Cold in Central Asia...
But that's about it for cold.
Enormous warm anomaly over the Arctic from Arctic amplification with significant heat records tumbling in Australia.
A closer look based around the equator.
La Nina is responsible for the cold blob in the Pacific.

It's like the planet has a fever.
October 2020 helps show the impacts of a changing climate. The Arctic did not freeze due to warmth stored in vast areas of open water - this was a record breaking month for lack of ice.
The air temperature was extremely high compared to normal.
