It is very important to understand what an anomaly map is. The red colour does not necessarily represent temperature above freezing. It can be -10 °C but still be +20 °C warmer than normal!
The anomaly map takes the current temperature and compared it to a 30 year average.
While large parts of the Arctic remain ice free, temperatures remain extremely high compared to normal for this time of year.
Temperature is unable to drop much below freezing where open water remains. In the past, ice cover would allow temperatures to be more like -25 °C.
Widespread late summer heat on the way for Europe, North Africa, Middle East and most of Russia.
Probably record breaking in some places.
#Heatwave right now in Turkey 🇹🇷 and Russia 🇷🇺

Extremely hot again on the fringe of the Arctic Ocean.
An astonishing + 34 °C has just been recorded at a latitude of 73 °N today in Russia. This is about + 20-25 °C warmer than normal.
Note how much open water there is compared to normal. Sea ice is taking a hit.
We are seeing extreme heat hammer the same places which have been extraordinary hot so far this year. Large parts of Asia are already averaging more than + 5 °C warmer than normal for the first five months this year.
2020 threatens the warmest global mean temperature record.
And let's not forget about Scandinavia. Currently we have temperatures widespread high 20s Celsius and in places breaking + 30 °C. This is hotter than large parts of Southern Europe right now.
Enormous area of record breaking warmth over Asia so far this year.
We are looking at an outrageous 5 month average of 7-8 °C above normal. This extreme is on top of a warm background signal across planet Earth. Not many places running cooler than normal these days 📈
