Taizō-in's most precious treasure is a painting called 'Hyōnenzu' (紙本墨画淡彩瓢鮎図), 'Catching Catfish With a Gourd'.
It was created in 1413 by Josetsu (如拙 1405-96), one of Japan's first 'ink wash style' (水墨画 ) Zen painters.

4) KAKKYO-YAMA (郭巨山)🕳️
The uniquely roofed Kakkyo-yama ('Pot-Digging Float') is named after a story in 'The 24 Filial Exemplars' (二十四孝).
Kakkyo is too poor to feed his family and concludes he must bury his son alive so that there is enough food for his aged mother.

Orihime was the daughter of the 'Sky King' (天帝 'Tentei'). Each day she wove beautiful cloth beside the Ama-no-gawa (天の川), but her duties kept her from finding a partner.
Tentei thus arranged for her to meet with Hikoboshi, a cowherd who worked on the opposite riverbank.
What better way to celebrate firefly season than with Kameya Yoshinaga's (亀屋良長) cooling 'hotaru-no-yoru' (蛍の夜 'evening fireflies').
The sweet is a type of 'kingyoku' (錦玉), a jelly made from boiling agar and sugar...particularly popular in summer.

Lots of you have mentioned the character Matara Okina (摩多羅 隠岐奈) from 'Hidden Star in Four Seasons' (東方天空璋).
I don't know much about this, but her name was taken from the god Matarajin (摩多羅神).
The fan art (I'm not sure of the artist) mimics an old scroll of the god.
Although its origins are debated, the festival celebrates the enshrinement of the god Matarajin at Kōryū-ji.
Introduced from China by Ennin (慈覺大師 793-864), Matarajin (摩多羅神) was popular with the Tendai sect and considered a guardian of Buddhism and a 'god of destiny'.

A kappa (河童) basically looks like a humanoid turtle. Dwelling by fresh water, these amphibious yōkai have a deep love for cucumbers & wrestling.
