👶ORIGINS🤔
Three main tales are told about Goemon's earlier life, before he formed a band of thieves to steal from the rich and give to the poor.
1) Born to a poor family in Kawachi Province, Gorokizu (五郎吉), as he was then known, moved to the capital & began a life of crime.
Ogata Kenzan (尾形乾山 1663-1743), one of the greatest ceramicists of the Edo period and older brother of painter Ogata Kōrin (1658–1716), opened a kiln in Narutaki village in 1699 (after studying under Ninsei 仁清). Remains of the furnace can still be seen at Hōzō-ji (法蔵寺).
Images of the boat (modeled on an ear of rice) are distributed by the shrine each Setsubun (節分-the start of spring in the lunar calendar) for luck in the new year.
Originally given only to the upper classes, from the Taishō period the shrine began to gift them to the public.
Quite suddenly the glowing Buddha tumbled from the top of the tree, transforming into a kestrel. It struck the ground, one wing injured.
Instantly boys ran up to the creature & killed it.
The Minister of Right nodded sagely...'So it was a Tengu after all!'.

Emperor Jimmu ascended the throne on New Year's Day (the first day of the first month) in the traditional lunar calendar.
There is no historical evidence that Jimmu existed, but the date is significant as New Year is an auspicious time for change and fresh undertakings.

📖LITERATURE🖋️
In 'The Tale of Genji' Murasaki Shikibu describes 'Yukuhakaeru-bashi' (ゆくはかへるの橋), the 'Go & Return Bridge'. It's a reference to Modori-bashi.
Standing at the boundary of the city, the bridge was used as poetic allusion for wanting to return to the capital.
What is a kappa (河童)?
Well, quite simply put, it looks like a humanoid turtle.
Dwelling by fresh water, these amphibious yōkai have a deep love for cucumbers and wrestling.
Although dangerous, one can escape a kappa by emptying the water-filled depression on its head.
