9/23/80: WHAT IF #24 is one of the finest issues of the series, as @thetonyisabella imagines Peter Parker's life had he been successful in rescuing Gwen. That it has original artist Gil Kane adds poignancy; it truly feels like AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #122 from an alternate timeline.
"DAREDEVIL was one of the books that were routinely assigned to new writers. It sold fairly consistently, but not very well; there was nothing major at stake if the writer flubbed it. It served as a low-risk arena in which they could hone their craft." - Steve Gerber
"I'm an atheistically-leaning agnostic. There may be a higher power of some sort, in other words, but I doubt it bears any resemblance to the Judeo-Christian-Islamic version of god. For me, SON OF SATAN was a peculiar sort of speculative fiction." - Steve Gerber
#ComicBookPSAs Make some friends, you damn kids! Don't sit inside all day and read comics!
Enjoy your birthday, @mattwieringo! And thanks for following!
Happy 74th birthday to Mike Grell! The artist/writer is one of the industry's finest pencilers of beautiful forms, as evidenced on GREEN LANTERN/GREEN ARROW, WARLORD, JON SABLE, and SUPERBOY & THE LEGION. Here's one of his first DC assignments: drawing Aquaman in 1974.
Golden Age artist Syd Shores was born OTD in 1916. He inked Kirby on CAPTAIN AMERICA in 1941, and eventually assumed penciller duties on the book. After WWII he mostly inked for Timely/Marvel (Colan, Heck, Mooney), but in the 70s drew a number of horror tales. He died in 1973.
