Just a quick lil suthn suthn i tossed together for the #Dilophosaurus #paleontology / #PaleoartProcess video I'm finishing up... (inspired by #fossil evidence)
#paleoart #dilophogaggle
@MLukeSmith @DustinGrowick @SV_POW (we're separated by less evolutionary time from lampreys than snails are separated from Mesozoic cephalopods, which evolved spiral shells independently, and which have totally different internal structure, as the shells of nautiloids & ammonoids function to control buoyancy 🙃)
@fishboy86164577 ALL the crazy combs on Chickens, pheasants, combed ducks Andean Condors, the snood on turkeys & lots of other flamboyant structures that leave NO evidence on the underlying bone are all nourished by the blood supply identified by @CrocHolliday et al.
GO WILD. #birdsaredinosaurs
Another #Jurassic #MorrisonFormation scene (which will be featured in my documentary #JurassicReimagined p2 - coming soon!) shows a mass feeding event on the carcass of a #sauropod dinosaur in a flooding river channel.
Did you know that many turtles chomp on carcasses?
Another #Cretaceous scene, but abt 20 million years older (90 MYA) & in N. #Africa... & the 1st #paleoart commission I ever did (in 2010), depicting the famous #Spinosaurus... & a bunch of other awesome creatures from the same formation...
Can you find BOTH Galianemys turtles?
Ok one more easy1 - my #mural for the #SavageAncientSeas exhibit I did for @TrieboldPaleo + @Mosasaurologist features a GIANT Protostega #seaturtle that lived around 80 million years ago in the big shallow sea that covered #Kansas & the rest of the middle of the US.
I agree 🤓
Feather tracts between scaly/bare skin regions is a detail I've played w/ in #paleoart, but I'd love input from #bird #anatomy people like
@KatrinavanGrouw
& #developmentalbiology ppl. In birds, these patterns are linked to the genetic code for skin development... 🧬 https://t.co/vgwOpzuSRd
This craft can be simplified for younger artists, but I've designed it so it's pretty anatomically accurate. You don't HAVE TO cut out every fenestration, or bend together a domed brain case, but if you do, you'll learn a lot about these bird-like dinos along the way.
Some of you may have seen this illustration (commissioned by @paleochick) I did for an interpretive panel in the #NavajoSandstone near #Moab #Utah. The NavajoSS in #UT is roughly the same age as the Aztec Sandstone in #NV, and our 3d exhibit will feature some similar elements...
