What an inspirational day spent at w/ the picturebook master, , & illustrator extraordinaire, . Taking the time to ‘slow look’, introducing chn to the wealth of meaning encoded in pictures & text, exploring creativity with chn.

Graphic novels are so multi-faceted. Multiple plots can converge or diverge from one another. Focal points can change. It takes the tired ‘story mountain’ & flips it completely.
I find that there’s so much potential for visual description & empathetic writing

Many thanks for this - lovely to receive as part of your blog competition.
Exploring lots of wordless texts recently & this has a lovely sense of flow, as though the book is subtly commanding you to turn the page. Great link to the environment, weather & forces.

Loved the playfulness of this by Elina Ellis. A fun exploration into old age that provides children with another perspective of older members of their family or community.

These would be nice writing stimuli & encourage chn to subvert expectations of what a quest entails, challenge stereotypes, link quests/journeys to empathy & write themselves into their own. Great thing w/ picturebooks is that you can use them across the whole primary age range.

Slow Loris by Alexis Deacon (out of print, unfortunately, but well worth tracking down) is a brilliant tale of why Loris’ are slow moving and tired during the day. Great link to adult life when we party too hard. 😂
Some more classics. 2/2

Beautiful quote. One I had not encountered before. Certainly befits Sydney’s work.

Loved ‘Where Your Wings Were’. Wish it could have travelled South. It’d be a great theme for to explore for KS2 readers.
