Whatever you think of the last few films, the artists that work on Star Wars have some amazing ideas and attention to detail. The force is strong in this cross section 😁😣

Atinuke’s work (with illustrations by Lauren Tobia, Onyinye Iwu, Warwick Johnson Cadwell) are a must have!

Challenging theme and subject. Means suggestions will undoubtedly be subject to your own school context (class sensitivity, suitability etc. ) and personal opinion. I’ve shared these in the past. Some are situated within the World Wars, others cover the theme of war.

Impossible to choose, without missing something incredibly important out. However, these would be examples I have shared with most UKS2 classes the last few years:
‘The Arrival’ by Shaun Tan
‘The Dam’ by David Almond and Levi Pinfold
‘Rhythm and Poetry’ by Karl Nova.

got in early with my favourite of all (Saga). Very much enjoyed these:
Colin Thompson, Scott McCloud and Chris Ware do sweeping, emotion-driven epics incredibly well.
Also, love everything that has come out of the mind of Brian K Vaughan!

Introduced to me by , Gary Crew is an Australian writer who creates unsettling picturebook masterpieces, all with very dark and twisted endings. Eilean Mor, illustrated by Jeremy Geddes, is a gothic, lighthouse story. Readable to the right Y6 class. 1/5

It’s definitely one that will prompt book chat about new arrivals. Its illustrations are powerful and infused with empathy. There’s a lovely correlation between the baby swift and the character’s newborn sister. A very moving masterpiece.

Not sure of a graphic novel with that focus, but know a very good picturebook that I’ve used with Y6, ‘Perfect’ by Nicola Davies, illus. by Cathy Fisher. It focuses on themes of disability & family, ending with a hopeful message.
